Express Yourself at MUD

The Master Make-up Artistry program includes all the core courses offered at Make-up Designory. None of the other programs offer as much diversity as the Master Make-up Artistry program. In 812 hours, over the course of 24 weeks, not only will you learn skills that can lead to employment in the worlds of fashion and film, and television, but this program will also prepare you to work in a special effects lab setting. The special make-up effects lab is where the appliances used for monster-making and creature-creation have their start.

Master Make-Up Artistry Program

MUD’s Master Make-Up Artistry Program offers a diverse set of skills to the student make-up artist. This program provides students with the necessary instruction to prepare them for work in the worlds of fashion, film, television, and a special make-up effects lab setting – specifically, where the appliances used for monster-making and creature-creation have their start. Program graduates will be prepared with the beauty, character, and lab skills to work in the fashion, film, or television industries and special make-up effects labs.

Beauty 101: Fundamentals of Beauty Make-Up Artistry

This course provides instruction on the basics of skin tone matching, highlights and shadows, facial analysis, contouring, color theory, corrective make-up, and proper cosmetic hygiene. Students are guided through the basics before progressing to creating flawless beauty make-ups or male corrective looks.

Beauty 201: Studio Hairstyling for the Make-Up Artist

This course provides students with instruction in the techniques required to create a variety of hairstyles, ranging from updos to hairstyles from different time periods. As students progress, the hairstyling techniques become more advanced in difficulty, and Beauty 101 skills are incorporated to create a complete look.

Beauty 301: Beauty Lab

In this course, students create make-up and hairstyling set-ups on professional models, in a series of projects that are designed to challenge the student while simulating actual working environments. Each set-up is captured by a professional photographer; photos may be used by students in their portfolios. While students receive lessons on the business of make-up artistry in all courses, this course devotes time to instructing students on website design, resume skills, marketing techniques, and other business acumen necessary to help them succeed in their careers.

Special Make-Up Effects 201: Character Make-Up Artistry

This course provides students with a foundation in character make-up. Students are shown aging techniques, bald caps and prosthetic applications, injury simulation, and the basics of laying crepe wool for beards, mustaches, or other body hair. In their final project, students combine the many techniques that they have learned to design and create a portfolio-ready special make-up effects character that is captured in an editorial photo shoot by a professional photographer.

Special Make-Up Effects 301: Lab Techniques

This course mimics an actual special make-up effects lab environment, and students must be prepared to get their hands dirty. Students are instructed on how to map the steps of creating a full prosthetic appliance. They begin by sculpting their ideas, life-casting models, sculpting a custom creature that seamlessly fits with their facial expressions, running foam, and painting the final product. Students are given the opportunity to have their final product captured in a portfolio shoot by a professional photographer.

I loved everything about it! As an international student, I highly recommend it!

I did a lot of research looking for the right makeup school for me and my interests. MUD was the best place for me. Teachers go above and beyond for their students and they have a great career placement program.

I took their master course and I don't regret taking it! This school really breaks that glass ceiling and gives you opportunities to meet and be around professionals in the industry. I graduated a little over a year ago, and I already have my dream job. Working for a recognized professional artist making feature films!

Best place for special effects; very convenient and parking right at the back of the school. All instructors are great. Be simple, love what you do and it will be a piece of cake.
